Our Total Fund Portfolio Management (TFPM) group is currently seeking an Associate Investment Manager to provide a high level of decision-making authority in the areas of strategy development and portfolio structuring and drive our CalPERS mission.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Manage and ensure the generation and/or delivery of model-driven asset allocation strategies, coordinating with various staff, external research consultants, data vendors, and benchmark providers. Review model output, manage adherence with compliance requirements and risk exposures, and oversee the communication between all stakeholders, culminating with internal implementation.
- Collect, organize, and manage large data sets, including both long-term historical data and higher-frequency, detailed data across a broad range of constituents. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with financial data from sources such as Bloomberg, Aladdin, and FactSet, with additional familiarity with private data platforms like Cambridge Associates and Burgiss considered a plus. Strong programming skills (preferably in Python or other languages) and quantitative expertise are required to organize relevant financial data and conduct analysis consistent with economic and financial theories. The ability to display and share data and analysis efficiently using tools like Power BI or Tableau is essential, as is the capacity to adapt to new data platforms and evolving technologies. A solid understanding of fundamental financial principles and relationships is also required.

Special Requirements
Statement of Qualifications
Please provide a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) for the hiring manager’s review. Applications received without an SOQ or those that do not respond to the specific questions below will not be considered.
The SOQ must be typed, titled “Statement of Qualifications”, and each question must be numbered and answered listing all relevant experience, education, and training, including places of employment, dates, and duties performed. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, or Financial Engineering).
- Experience with computer programming (e.g., Python, Matlab, C++, Java, R, VBA, and/or SQL).
- Experience creating dashboards with Power BI or Tableau to summarize investment data.
- Experience with institutional investment management.
- Experience with hedge funds, private and public equities, fixed income, private credits, real assets, and liquid assets.
- Experience analyzing hedge fund strategy and performance.
