MANAGER / BIOLOGY LAB

Position Number: S-3377

Position Summary:

Supervises and coordinates laboratory activities and teaching personnel for the introductory microbiology and physiology labs and oversees preparation of laboratory materials, maintenance of laboratory equipment, training of graduate teaching assistants for the microbiology and physiology labs, and overseas the biological waste program in the department of biology.



Required Qualifications:

Masters degree or bachelors degree with 2 years of experience in the area of Microbiology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or Molecular Biology, with a preference for the area of Microbiology.
One year of additional experience with microbiology techniques.
One year of supervisory experience.
Experience with the use and routine maintenance of equipment used in microbiology and other relevant biology disciplines (e.g., physiology).
Knowledge of laboratory principles and techniques in microbiology, physiology, and related fields. Focus is on microbiology.
Demonstrated ability to initiate and complete tasks independently and coordinate multiple projects.
Strong interpersonal, time management, and prioritization skills.
The ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and stakeholders in a diverse community.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency in the use of computers and Microsoft Office software.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.



Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in a related discipline.
Knowledge of laboratory principles and techniques used in other relevant biology disciplines like physiology.
Experience with the use and routine maintenance of equipment used in other relevant biology disciplines like physiology.
Teaching experience
Experience managing a budget and ordering supplies to run an instructional lab.
Demonstrated ability to supervise student workers.
Demonstrated ability to work within an instructional team.



Duties & Responsibilities:


Maintains microbial cultures and prepares media and reagents for microbiology and physiology labs.
Maintains necessary equipment and supplies for teaching laboratories in Brooks Hall.
Orders supplies and maintains inventory for microbiology, physiology, and related teaching labs.
Keeps the laboratory manuals up to date. Submits laboratory manual for printing.
Sets up and breaks down materials and equipment for microbiology and other biology (e.g., physiology) teaching labs.
Trains and supervises student employees and graduate assistants who assist in the running and preparation of laboratories (primarily microbiology and physiology labs).
Collaborates with faculty in weekly Teaching Assistant meetings for primarily microbiology and physiology labs
Evaluates assigned graduate teaching assistants.
Develops, assesses, and troubleshoots laboratory exercises and materials.
Coordinates and maintains the use of shared teaching equipment in Brooks Hall.
Provides input for and monitors a budget for teaching laboratory supplies and equipment (primarily for microbiology and physiology labs).
Oversees the medical waste program in the Department of Biology.
Oversees the use and routine maintenance of autoclaves in Brooks Hall and the Biosciences Building.
Other duties as assigned.
