Summary: This position offers opportunity to make a difference in our patients' lives; ensuring insurance company notifications are completed correctly and timely, benefit requirements are met, and benefits can be issued to cover charges while hospitalized. The Utilization Coordinator position will work with a variety of third-party payers, (private health insurance companies, state and federal agencies) and programs within the SD Human Services Center. This position requires a strong attention to detail and a focus on quality and compliance, ensuring patient records are complete and accurate upon discharge or transfer. This is a rewarding position supporting the mission of DSS and HSC in a non-direct patient care role and has the ability to positively affect patients with their insurance and third-party pay sources.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Excellent customer service skills, experience in medical prior authorization, utilization review, medical insurance requirements for continued stay, Health Information Management and release of information. Quality management and auditing practices. Business or health information related degree or certification preferred but not required.
Knowledge of: - hospital regulations outlined in SD Administrative rules, state statutes, and federal regulations;
- concepts related to patient's rights, confidentiality, and safety;
- medical terminology;
- electronic health record access, auditing, and quality assurance reviews;
- office equipment, including scanners, fax machine, multifunction copy machines, and phones;
- computer software applications.
Skills to: - interpret data and analytics and create easy to understand, meaningful reports;
- utilize quality improvement concepts and process;
- confidently communicate reports to committees to provide information and give assistance as needed.
Ability to:
- understand, comprehend, and apply local, state, and federal regulations in process improvement projects;
- work with electronic health record to export data to compile reports;
- show initiative, make decisions, resolve problems, and work independently with minimal supervision;
- analyze and evaluate data files to submit for Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities Quality Reporting requirements;
- schedule and manage work time by assigning appropriate priorities to projects and tasks to meet deadlines for report submissions both internally and externally;
- analyze and evaluate incident reports, communicate discrepancies to supervisors for follow up;
- prepare clear, concise documents with clearly organized thoughts consisting of detailed analysis of data and statistics.
