Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Music offers both undergraduate (B.M.) and graduate (M.M.) degrees with concentrations in Sound Recording Technology (SRT) and a B.A. in Music Industry Studies. The undergraduate program began in 2010 and has since grown to become a highly sought-after area of study. Students participate in small, hands-on classes in our studio facilities and learn to command a variety of technologies used in the creation and production of recorded music. The program is music centric; it is not strictly an audio engineering program. All SRT majors are music majors who take core music courses in music theory, history, class piano, applied instrument/voice lessons, and ensemble participation in addition to their course work in the SRT concentration. All majors must also participate in a music industry internship and complete a capstone album.

The School of Music, one of three schools within the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts (Music, Art, and Theater/Dance), has approximately 450 majors and offers degrees in music performance, education, SRT, and music industry. The university recently completed a major fine arts expansion, including the development of a world-class recording arts facility among other facility additions. The SRT area features two remarkable recording studios, an impressive microphone collection with many legendary models, a dedicated mixing room with a variety of top-shelf monitors and mixing equipment, a green room, and a classroom/lab with 12 stations and a JBL Master Series Dolby Atmos-enabled sound system, plus a dedicated isolation chamber.

Studio A is outfitted with a wide assortment of revered outboard processing equipment, a large main live room, three isolation chambers (including a drum room), a 64-channel Rupert Neve 5088 console, and ATC SCM-200 mains at the heart of the control room—our predominantly analog studio. Studio B, with a digital flair, features a 64-fader SSL System-T, specifically designed for immersive audio work. The control room is equipped with a collection of iconic preamplifiers and dynamic processors along with a 7.1.4 Focal immersive audio system. Studio B also has a medium-sized live room with a dedicated isolation chamber.
