The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary
The Data Science Institute at Columbia University is a world-leading institute in research and education in theory and practice of the emerging field of data science. The Data Science Institute???s mission involves advancing the state of the art in data science while ensuring the responsible use of data for the benefit of society. To drive both innovative approaches and best practices for student support and development, as well as community building-centered for the Institute???s graduate student population, the Institute invites candidates for a temporary Student Affairs Specialist.
Reporting to the Alumni and Student Engagement Officer, and supporting that role and the Associate Director of Admissions and Academic Affairs, the Student Affairs Specialist will support a wide range of activities for the Master of Data Science program at Columbia University. Responsibilities include direct student support and operations of key DSI Student Affairs programs and initiatives for the M.S. Data Science student population, including programs to promote student community building and professional developments.
This position is a twelve month temporary position with the possibility to be made permanent, depending on the Institute???s needs.
Responsibilities
Address general inquiries from students on a wide array of University policies and procedures such as academic deadlines, graduation clearance, degree application deadlines, programming events, course and degree requirements, and referring specific advising issues to the Associate Director of Admissions and Academic Affairs. Manage correspondence through the shared inbox.
Curate, produce, and evaluate a series of events and programs for students focused on community building and professional development throughout the academic calendar year. Work with DSI and campus partners to plan and coordinate logistics for these events.
Support Data Science Student Council programming.
Collaborate with the Data Science Institute communications team on the development of communications campaigns for the student community to promote events and that connect students to information, resources and opportunities.
Serve as the supporting coordinator on all social and career based programming and initiatives for the M.S. Data Science student population, such orientation programs, commencement and signature academic events.
Support administrative processing of specific academic affairs initiatives; such as student CPT/OPT processing, designing and formatting of operational manuals and presentations.
Other duties as assigned.
This position will require some evening hours during the semester, and very occasional (i.e. 1-2 times per year) weekend work.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor???s degree or equivalent experience and 0-2 years of relevant experience.
Experience working in a higher education setting with a diverse student body and knowledge of issues related to the student experience in higher education required.
Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to coordinate, manage, and implement in a fast-paced environment with careful attention to detail.
Experience with databases and student information systems is preferable.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
