The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies seeks two research technicians to help conduct a three-year study on the Hudson River. This study is part of a large multi-partner effort to sustain and redefine ecosystem and fisheries monitoring in this iconic river system.
The successful applicants will spend 50-75% of their time conducting field work on the Hudson River estuary between Troy and Manhattan, and the remainder of their time on lab and office work. The field work will be conducted primarily from small boats, as well as from shore. The position is based at the Cary Institute in Millbrook, New York. Specific responsibilities include leading field crews to collect biological, chemical, and physical measurements and samples; identifying and quantifying zooplankton, zoobenthos, and phytoplankton; maintaining data in accordance with project QA/QC and data management protocols; purchasing and maintaining supplies and equipment; and other tasks.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States; have a valid and clean driver's license; be able to swim, to lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds, and to stand or sit for extended periods; be able and willing to work on a boat and on shore in remote areas and adverse weather conditions at all times of year; be able to take occasional pre-scheduled overnight or weekend trips; and be highly capable working independently and as part of a team. A driving record background check will be conducted as part of the hiring process.
The following skills or qualifications are also desirable: excellent work skills including organization, communication, decision-making, and a positive attitude; a Bachelor's or Master's degree or equivalent experience in ecology or a related field; a boater safety certification recognized by the State of New York; first aid and CPR certification; experience with trailering, operating, navigating, or maintaining small boats; experience using paper and digital navigational charts, GPS, and GIS software; experience with relational databases; experience with automated sensors; and experience using basic hand tools.
These are salaried, full-time, benefited positions, with a starting salary in the range of $40,000 to $58,000, depending on qualifications. The Cary Institute has a 35-hour work week. There is a potential of housing on site at the Cary Institute at a modest cost. The start date is 6 January 2025. Funding for the positions is secured for a period of three years; the initial appointments would be for one year, but could be extended upon satisfactory performance.
