Job Description

Job Overview: The phlebotomist performs phlebotomy under the direction of a department Supervisor or designee and performs venipuncture, heel sticks, finger sticks, and bleeding times according to standard operating procedures and delivers specimens to the appropriate department.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Phlebotomy Certification

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Full Time
  • Day Shift

Essential Functions:

  • Perform phlebotomy under the direction of a department Supervisor or designee:
  • Performs venipuncture, heel sticks, finger sticks, and bleeding times according to standard operating procedures and delivers specimens to the appropriate department,
  • Responds promptly to STAT, timed test requests, and performs routine rounds on time,
  • Enters test requests and receives specimens in LIS computer system EPIC
  • Covers Central Processing
  • Greets and registers laboratory outpatients, instructs outpatients on correct collection and storage of specimens, and ensures complete and correct documentation for Medicare/Medicaid patients as required by federal law and corporate compliance policies
  • Obtains and verifies information prior to processing test orders,
  • Provides proper documentation of patient identification and test results,
  • Performs quality control as per policy,
  • Read, be familiar with, participate in periodic education/training regarding, and comply with, RWJBH-Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and other corporate compliance policies
  • Practices precepts of Standard Precaution, Hazard and Safety guidelines
  • Participates in Health Fair screenings as needed,
  • Assists in orientation and training of new employees and participates in affiliated teaching programs of the hospital as assigned,
  • Assume the duty of overseeing daily operations of Phlebotomy in the absence of the Phlebotomy Supervisor,
  • Assists the Phlebotomy Supervisor to oversee the daily operation of the Phlebotomy department,
  • Performs staff training on new equipment and or procedures under the direction of the Phlebotomy Supervisor,
  • Required to maintain continued education on MediaLab,
  • Responsible to adhere to departmental and Laboratory policies and procedures,
  • Perform other duties as assigned
