UC Irvine's Department of Surgery faculty members have expertise in multiple complex diseases and are integrated to subspecialties including cancer, gastrointestinal disease, vascular diseases cardiovascular diseases, hepatobiliary disease, trauma and surgical critical care.
The Division of Trauma, Burns, Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine is recruiting for an Advanced Practice Practitioner. The division manages the only ACS-verified Adult Level 1 Trauma Center in Orange County as well as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, with 5400 trauma activations for a county of 3.2 million people. The faculty also manage our ACS and ABA-verified Regional Burn Center, the Emergency General Surgery Service, and a busy 24 bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The division faculty oversee an outstanding ACGME-accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship (3 fellows/year).

Responsibilities:

The position of Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Surgery, requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the various division of department of surgery, including Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service. Duties include and not limited to assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all patients on the general surgery services as well as patients in the surgical intensive care unit.

  • The Nurse Practitioner will participate with inpatient sign out at beginning and end of shift.
  • Follows up with the General Surgery teams/residents/attending physicians.
  • Will be involved in trauma resuscitations and performing surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients. Responsibility for care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc) and follow-up, obtain consults as needed, and discharge patients (including discharge summary, instructions, and medications) when appropriate.
  • Triage phone calls.
  • Responsible for the reviewing critical labs, follow-up of results with patient and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and exploring patient’s interpretation of health needs.
  • Incumbent will identify and treat patients and manage treatment of hospitalized patients.
  • The NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.
  • Under the joint supervision of Chief of Trauma, Burns, and Critical Care Services and the Trauma Medical Director and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians.
  • A Nurse Practitioner is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide advanced nursing care in their area of specialization.


This position may perform:


•Functions as appropriate to their “scope of practice” (In general, the “scope of practice” includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure). Familiarity with state statute for their licenses is necessary.
•Approved privileges are unique to each person and are unlikely to include ALL privileges
•The NP professional may provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all Health licensed settings and affiliates.
• The NP has responsibility for the standards of care for their specified patient population and evidences self-direction and accountability both to quality of care and in the development of their role within the all Health locations and affiliates.
•Advanced Practice Practitioners (APP) are required to be credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day.
•The NP is accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, or the Administrative Manager.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties. Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.
  • Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
  • NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG
  • Additional NP National Board Certification: Not Applicable
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification.
  • Within six months of hire, ATLS certification.
  • Within one year of hire, PALS and ATLS certification.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience experience to support setting and patient population.


Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, Power point and Outlook).
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience Experience in Trauma/Critical Care.
