Job Summary

If you are committed to ensuring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right to live, love, work and play in their communities, the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) offers exciting opportunities to impact ongoing evolution of a state-of-the-art service delivery system, enabling people across South Dakota to lead healthy, independent, productive lives.

The DDD Nurse II works to ensure people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are provided with choices to be active participants and contributing members of their communities and will work closely with other DDD employees and community providers in the capacity of ensuring the health and safety of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through policy and case file reviews and onsite visits, DDD Nurses evaluate provider implementation of healthcare practices and address issues of non-compliance. The Nurse II position acts as a resource to providers by interpreting state and federal regulations and best practices in the field in addition to review of provider data related to healthcare needs of those supported through DDD programs, answering questions, and providing information and resources. The role also includes opportunities to develop and implement continuing education for Community Support Provider nurses, develop and review resource materials, and provide technical assistance to DDD program staff, providers and other stakeholders. In addition, the Nurse II plays a key role in ensuring the health, safety and welfare of program participants by partnering with Community Support Providers, as well as assuring compliance with state and federal regulations necessary to maintain eligibility for federal financial participation; and monitoring Community Support Provider activities to promote continuous quality improvement.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Registered Nursing License
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • Minimum associate degree in nursing (ADN), however, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and at least 2 years' experience as a practicing Registered Nurse is preferred.
Knowledge of:
  • disability awareness;
  • person first language;
  • person centered practices;
  • healthcare issues facing people with disabilities, services and supports available for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities;
  • applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations pertaining to intellectual/developmental disabilities.
Successful applicants will also have the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships within DDD as well as with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate compassion, respect, courtesy and tact in all interactions.
  • Communicate information effectively and accurately both verbally and via written communication.

  • Work closely with other DDD employees to effectively and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Demonstrate a positive approach towards challenges.
