We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Mortgage Underwriter to join a dynamic team! This role is perfect for someone with a strong background in mortgage underwriting and a passion for delivering exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be responsible for reviewing and validating income, asset, and collateral documents, including self-employed tax returns and Condominium documentation. The Mortgage Underwriter will work with various mortgage products such as Conventional, Non-QM, FHA, VA, USDA, and more.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and assess residential mortgage loan applications to determine approval or denial.
- Analyze financial statements, credit reports, ratios (e.g., debt-to-income, loan-to-value), appraisals, title reports, and other relevant documentation.
- Verify income and employment details, and evaluate the value of collateral and assets.
- Ensure compliance with guidelines for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, USDA, and other applicable standards.
- Review mortgage loan documentation to confirm conditions meet established investor and regulatory standards.
- Ensure that loan terms and property specifications align with industry, state, and federal regulations.
- Communicate loan decisions clearly to internal teams, including lenders, coordinators, and processors.
- Document approval or denial reasons in the loan file.
- This role is remote, with occasional in-office work based on company needs, with prior notice.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of recent experience in retail residential mortgage underwriting (FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional) with a strong understanding of agency guidelines.
- In-depth knowledge of USDA guidelines.
- DE, SAR, and LAPP certifications are a plus.
- Strong understanding of ATR/QM requirements.
- Experience with Encompass LOS.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and meet production standards.
- High integrity and exceptional work ethic.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of compliance, disclosure, and post-closing requirements.
- Preference for candidates in the Eastern Standard Time (EST) zone.
