Overview:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Facilities Operations Directorate, has an opening for an Insulator. In this role you will, under limited supervision, apply and remove insulating materials to a wide variety of exposed surfaces to reduce heat loss, heat absorption, prevent moisture condensation or to deaden sound.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Remove and install various insulation materials and systems including, but not limited to asbestos, fiberglass, kaylo, foamglas, insulating pads, rock wool, Armaflex, ceramic fiber, and perlite.
Layout, cut, fit and cement insulating materials to pipes, ducts, tanks, boilers, and other complex-shaped structures using tape measures, knives, scissors, and hand tools
Apply protective metal jacketing over insulated surfaces and fittings
Apply spray on encapsulants
Build and maintain temporary containment structures and ventilation systems for Asbestos Abatement Projects
Remove asbestos-containing materials from pipes, ducts, tanks, boilers, and other structures using knives, scrapers, HEPA vacuums, hand tools, and glove bags
Dismantle containment structures
Work in confined spaces
Properly dispose of asbestos-containing wastes
Prepare job sites for air monitoring
Pick up, transport, and compact asbestos wastes according to hazardous waste guidelines
Clean all work areas thoroughly
Clean, assemble, and repair HEPA vacuums and negative air machines
Other tasks as assigned by management

Basic Qualifications:
A minimum of 5-years verifiable experience in the insulating trades or an equivalent combination of education and relevant insulating experience.
An Insulator must be able to perform basic trade skills such as related mathematics, use of tools, make material lists, compliance with codes and regulations, and observe all safety rules.
Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a 4-year apprenticeship in the insulating trades
Experience with asbestos abatement.
Experience reading and following field drawings and blueprints.
Thorough knowledge of insulating materials and their application.
Ability to select and install insulating materials based on the heat characteristics of the material being insulated.
Ability to maintain a good working relationship with customers and fellow employees.
Ability to give attention to detail and thoroughly complete job tasks.
Ability to be reliable, responsible and dependable in fulfilling job obligations.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Special Requirements:
Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
