POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for coaching, character development and providing direction to student athlete so that they might achieve a high level of skill as well as an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork in basketball. This position requires one to interact thoughtfully and respectfully with student athletes, fellow coaches, staff, parents, and community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Provides quality coaching and instruction to students participating in the men’s basketball program
2. Plans, directs, and coaches high school men’s basketball program that develops student/athlete’s fullest potential while being regionally competitive and ethically run.
3. Ensure South Dakota High School Activities Association rules and regulation compliance.
4. Recruit student athletes who can achieve academic and athletic success
5. Assist student athletes in realizing individual and team goals.
6. Supervises and coordinates basketball events and activities.
7. Attends scheduled basketball practices, classes, and all competitions.
8. Provides ongoing oversite of student athlete’s conduct both on and off the court.
9. Assists with conflict resolution
10. Enforces safety regulations and procedures through supervision of students involved in the program.
11. Assists the Director of Athletics to schedule events and travel.
12. Develops an event management plan for each home game.
13. Helps develop assistant coaches.
14. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of the District’s operating requirements, policies, procedures, and practices; and local, state, and federal regulations related to department programs and operations.

2. Knowledge of high school basketball.

3. Ability to research and analyze detailed information and make appropriate recommendations.

4. Ability to develop goals and objectives.

5. Ability to prepare, recommend and monitor an operating budget, including line-item budgeting.

6. Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the District.
7. Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.
8. Ability to instruct and train in methods and procedures.
9. Knowledge of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications consistent for this position.
10. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively in English in both written and verbal form.
11. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports.
12. Ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems and interpreting policies and regulations.
13. Ability to communicate detailed information effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
14. Ability to handle sensitive interpersonal situations calmly and tactfully.
15. Ability to maintain professionalism at all times.
16. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with individuals within and outside the organization.
17. Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and respond after hours as needed.

• This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
• Work has standard vision requirements.
• Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
• Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
• Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
• Work has little to no exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
• Work is generally in a moderately noisy office setting (e.g. business office, light traffic).

• Valid Driver’s License

• Fundamentals of Coaching Course (one-time requirement)

• First Aid, Health and Safety for Coaches (taken every two years)

• Concussion in Sport: What You Need to Know (Annual Renewal)

• Other National Federal Of High School Athletics (NFHS) assigned

• Employment is contingent upon a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance, paid for by the applicant.
