Duties

As a Fish and Wildlife Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinates and facilitates activities pursuant to sections 4,6,7,8, and 10 of the Endangered Species Act. Prepares written regulatory documents and reports. Plans and conducts status surveys for both listed and candidate species, in cooperation with other Federal and state agency personnel, private organization representatives, and contractors; negotiates agreements for status surveys with prospective contractors and personnel of cooperating agencies.
  • Acts as technical advisor to other Field Office staff on the habitat needs of rare, candidate, proposed, and federally listed species for the purpose of Section 7 consultations, with other Federal agencies and designated non-Federal representatives; also consults with staff in preparation of reasonable and prudent measures, reasonable and prudent alternatives, and conservation recommendations.
  • Plans, investigates, conducts, and reviews on-site ecological investigations on a wide variety of the most complex and diverse Federal land and water and other resource development proposals to determine their effects on fish and wildlife resources, with special emphasis on rare, candidate, proposed, federally listed threatened and endangered species habitat, riparian habitat, wetland ecology and management, and other habitats of concern in the affected area.
  • Prepares objective and complete written reports and other documents and delivers oral presentations to the Service, other agency and organization professionals, and public groups based on investigations conducted, analyzing present and future impacts of various complex project alternatives on fish and wildlife resources and economic/recreational uses thereof.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.


Basic Requirement:

  • Possess a bachelors degree or higher in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. I will submit my transcripts with my application that verifies this. OR
  • Possess a combination of education and experience that included coursework equivalent to a major (i.e. 24 semester/36 quarter hours or school equivalent) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines as shown in A above, PLUS appropriate experience or additional education, and in combination equals 100% of the basic requirements.

Minimum Qualification [GS-11]

  • Possess one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the federal service (obtained in either the public or private sector). Experience may include: (1) Evaluating the impact of various land and water development projects upon the fish, wildlife, and/or plant resources of an area and the effects to species status; (2) Coordinating activities with internal and external stakeholders to achieve fish and wildlife conservation objectives; (3) working with federal environmental laws (e.g., Endangered Species Act, specifically Sections 7 and 10; Clean Water Act; Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act; National Environmental Policy Act), regulations, and policies involving natural resource issues; (4) Preparing documents such as biological opinions/assessments as required under Section 7 and agreements under Section 10 of the Endangered Species Act; (5) Writing biological assessments, NEPA documents, resource planning reports and other environmental compliance documents to provide advice related to the conservation of wildlife and their habitats; (6) Implementing biological work and/or habitat preservation and development work for endangered, threatened, proposed, and candidate species and their habitats; (7) Proficiency in written and oral communications.   • Possess three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree -OR- have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or closely related field which provided the knowledge skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
  • Possess a combination of experience and education as described above, which together equals 100% of the requirement.





Minimum Qualification [GS-12]

  • Possess one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in the public or private sectors). Experience may include: (1) Evaluating the impact of various land and water development projects upon the fish, wildlife, and/or plant resources of an area and the effects to species status; (2) Leading program management within an office, including implementing landscape level projects, and facilitating multi-partner efforts including developing memorandums of understanding, cooperative agreements, or programmatic consultations; (3) Implementing federal environmental laws (e.g., Endangered Species Act, specifically Sections 7 and 10; Clean Water Act; Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act; National Environmental Policy Act), regulations, and policies involving natural resource issues; (4) Preparing documents such as biological opinions/assessments as required under Section 7 and agreements under Section 10 of the Endangered Species Act; (5) Reviewing biological assessments, NEPA documents, resource planning reports and other environmental compliance documents to provide advice related to the conservation of wildlife and their habitats; (6) Leading and implementing biological work and/or habitat preservation and development work for endangered, threatened, proposed, and candidate species and their habitats; (7) Project management, including development of project timelines and implementation of projects according to schedules, providing contract/agreement assistance, technical assistance, and guidance on conservation projects. (8) Excellence in oral communication, and writing, reviewing, and editing documents. NOTE: Your resume must contain sufficient information in these areas to be found qualified.

Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
