Job Description

SUMMARY

Organize and establish a successful ministry program and to encourage the people involved in music ministry of the importance of their responsibility to minister their talents through sacred song. The Director of Music and Liturgy, as a key member of the pastoral team, is to be thoroughly committed to Jesus Christ and His Church. He/she is a skilled and competent musician who is familiar with and committed to the vision set forth for liturgy and worship by the Second Vatican Council and the United States Bishops. It is further expected that such knowledge and commitments will lead to an appropriate execution of the position responsibilities. This individual has responsibilities that include weekend and seasonal liturgies, holy days, and other parish celebrations as well as training, directing, and scheduling for choirs, cantors, and other liturgical ministers. This individual directs an adult vocal choir and can cantor when needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Administrative Leadership Plans and manages a comprehensive musical program for the parish Coordinates with and suggests to the Pastor Mass settings, hymns, and choral pieces Distributes musical content to participants (cantors, instrumentalists, choir members, etc.) Recruits, schedules, rehearses, and supervises cantors and musicians for all liturgies Supervises and maintains the parish's musical resources, spaces, instruments, etc. Manages the departmental budget Coordinates and provides music for weddings, funerals, and other special occasions Provides encouragement, evaluation, and appreciation of musicians and cantors Communicates and collaborates effectively within the Music Department, with other parish departments, and within the parish generally Attends department head meetings and general staff meetings Oversight of music room and PA system Other responsibilities as needed Liturgy Leads and participates in liturgical music as an organist, pianist, accompanist, etc. Directs choir, assembly, and musicians at liturgies (weekend liturgies, and major events) Recruits, prepares, and leads the various choirs, cantors, and instrumentalists Schedules and leads rehearsals Prepares and distributes musical teaching aids, scores, etc. Maintains the music organization (letters to musicians, schedules, music ministry social events, care of equipment) Maintains the level of knowledge and skills required to remain current and successful in the field of sacred music. Reads material related to the profession, attends workshops or conventions, and participates in local, regional, and diocesan professional organizations, as approved and as appropriate Notifies parish musicians of workshops, conferences, etc., which relate to their ministry Serve as the staff liaison to the members of the Liturgy Committee and facilitates their learning and understanding of liturgy. Prepare Liturgy Planners (including liturgy binders for mass) for all solemnities, major feast days and parish liturgies, at least two weeks in advance. Disseminate to sacristan and/or clergy. Has oversight of all music groups (e.g., Mariachi) Head of Liturgy Committee Assist with outside groups and organizations including St. John's Cathedral

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Music from four-year college or university; equivalent training at a music conservatory with a strong knowledge of Catholic worship and Liturgy, or one to two years related experienceand/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Skilled at developing and directing choirs for Mass, with a minimum of 3 year's experience in a Catholic parish. Must have the ability to sing, cantor, and play piano and organ at a high level in order to provide sacred music for the celebration of Holy Eucharist and other Catholic rites and liturgical celebrations. Must be an accomplished Organist and Pianist. Capable of helping the parish grow in its understanding and appreciation of various musical styles and the role of sacred music in the liturgy Pastoral Leadership skills: must have good communication skills and sensitivity to the cultural background and worship experience of parishioners, as well as leadership skills that can allow him or her to enter dialogue with parishioners to guide them to a deeper understanding of the role of sacred music in the liturgy. A practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church, fully supportive of the Church's authentic magisterium, modeling a Catholic vocation and moral life. Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills (written and oral). Take initiative, to meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision. Manage a multi-task job and appropriately adjust priorities. Must have a strong dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction. Possess a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Highly organized and able to tackle multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent time and project management skills with the ability to handle a wide range of competing demands. Ability to develop, harness relationships and work collaboratively with support teams at other locations. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office software including, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Operating procedures associated with general office equipment including audio/visual equipment, personal computers, laptop computers, printers, scanners, digital/analog recording devices, etc. We believe that work should be rewarding as well as challenging.
