Student Life & Leadership is currently recruiting baristas to operate the only student-run coffee shop on campus, Seawolf Grounds, located in the Student Union!
Baristas offer high-quality coffee products and customer service to students, staff, faculty, and the general public, but they also learn valuable skills and gain hands-on experience while working on campus. Baristas serve as members of the Student Union staff and can be cross-trained on Information Desk duties. Prior work experience as a barista, in customer service, and in sales and cash handling is preferred but not required of candidates for this position. This student staff position is 10-15 hours/week and starts at $11.88/hour. Preference will be given to students with flexible hours and availability to meet scheduling needs: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 3:30 pm.
To thrive in this role a successful candidate would have prior work experience as a barista and prior customer service experience. Prior sales and cash handling experience would also be beneficial. Skills that would be needed are the ability to perform customer service with training, ability to handle sales and cash with training, ability to prepare coffee and other beverages with training, ability to carry out assigned tasks and projects with supervision, and the ability to exercise patience, focus, and understanding in stressful situations.
Other skills and experience that would be helpful are knowledge of office equipment, personal computers, copiers, and scanners. Good organizational skills, good time management skills, attention to detail, strong communication skills, ability to lift up to 50 pounds with accommodation. Additionally a successful candidate would need to be able to successfully complete the UA FERPA and mandatory Title IX trainings, and be willing to learn all job duties and accept new job duties as needed.
To be eligible for student employment in Student Life & Leadership, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
Preference will be given to students who have completed at least one academic semester at UAA.
Preference will be given to students with flexible hours and availability to meet scheduling needs: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Candidates must be available for training prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
This position is open to undergraduate students only.
This is a part-time, 10-15 hours a week, student position paying $11.88 per hour.
