Department/Program Description: The Department of Art & Art History is an interdisciplinary department offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in art history, art practice, documentary filmmaking, and film and media studies. Position Summary: The Department of Art and Art History is seeking an Art Practice Technician. The Art Practice Technician will work under general supervision of the Studio and Sculpture Lab Manager and must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset. It is critical that this position exhibit the abilities to practice sound judgment and decision-making, effective written & oral communication, strong attention to detail and respectful relationship management. This position must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies and procedures as they relate to supporting art practice courses - the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical.

The Art Practice Technician supports one of the most renowned Art Practice programs in the country. Under the supervision of the Studio and Sculpture Lab Manager, the Art Practice Technician works closely with faculty, staff, and students to provide day-to-day support of graduate and undergraduate art practice courses in the Department of Art & Art History.

Working closely with the Art Practice Lab Managers, the Art Practice Technician is responsible for ensuring an accessible and safe learning environment, by overseeing the use and safe keeping of art practice facilities. This is a hands-on position that provides critical support and has independent responsibilities in maintaining equipment and organizing material safety in line with all University policies including Environmental Health and Safety.

The position will routinely work with beginning and advanced level students by conducting group, class, and one on one project-based training and safety orientations for students across the Art Practice Labs and keep open lab hours in the Sculpture Lab. The position may supervise student employees.

The Art Practice Labs are multifaceted and uniquely designed to each art discipline. Areas include Sculpture, Experimental Media Arts, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography and Interdisciplinary studios. Equipment includes but is not limited to woodshop and metal shop equipment, CNC router, laser cutters, 3D printers, and printing presses.

This is a 75% FTE, two-year fixed term, non-exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus. This position will have a regular schedule of Wednesday through Saturday, subject to change based on operational needs.

CORE DUTIES:

* Serve as property operations / maintenance point of contact for facilities' issues in assigned building(s), unit(s), lab(s); initiate work requests, monitor completion; coordinate and monitor routine maintenance services completion (trash, utilities, custodial, pest control, long term preservation, inspections, grounds, landscapes, alarms, systems & equipment).

* Perform condition assessments on appearance, equipment, or troubleshooting (formulated by another group, FSM); implement preventive maintenance plan; coordinate & integrate utility usage/optimization(monitor usage, gather info, provide recommendations, follow-up, shutdown requirements); coordinate contract work, third party vendors.

* Identify, recommend & implement building operations & process modifications to the facility for increased productivity and/or cost reduction; coordinate maintenance logistics (to avoid faculty conflicts, events).

* Handle property administration by completing tagging, data entry and inventory; completing purchase orders, receiving; and completing record keeping, tracking, information gathering and support for space allocation decision makers.

* Implement facility security programs by distributing keys, providing building access, monitoring access records, assessing security infrastructure needs (security cameras, interlocks, alarms); and assessing and changing access schedules.

* Complete project coordination by: performing the assigned tasks within department projects; acting as a project coordinator/liaison; and overseeing and executing projects (limited to small, local projects), including their organization, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation.

* Serve as safety management coordinator by correcting identified safety issues; tracking chemical inventory, disposal, hazardous waste; communicating and implementing disposal procedures in laboratory settings; conducting safety training and/or new employee facility orientation; and participating in emergency preparedness, recovery and business continuity coordination.

* Coordinate communications services (network administration, desktop support, primary troubleshooting, and telephony liaison); provide updates, alerts, notifications to building occupants, including websites, phones; and oversee mailing services, shipping and delivery.

* Coordinate space management and planning activities including: move coordination; space inventory; space allocation tracking; specifying set-ups; maximizing space utilization; providing input into facilities renewal model; and capital plan implementation (as assigned).

* Other duties may also be assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

* Associate degree and two years related, demonstrated facilities administration experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

* Interpersonal skills, mature judgment required to interact effectively with a broad range of people, including faculty and vendors, both individually and in groups.

* Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects with competing priorities, meet deadlines and project plans with short- and long-term end dates.

* Working knowledge of applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project.

* Experience working with internal and external vendors and services contracting.

* Background knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste; emergency preparedness plans and their implementation; and property administration specific to PO tracking, receiving, and inventory control.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

* BA in an art discipline strongly preferred.

* A strong background in arts education as well as extensive experience with physical art making techniques including - the use of wood and metalworking equipment and tools, basic machining, and working with laser cutters.

* Solid workshop, repair and maintenance skills related to art making, including preventative maintenance, performing condition assessment of equipment and advising on equipment needs.

* A proven track record with health and safety compliance and knowledge of relevant regulations and best practices.

* Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with students, staff, and faculty, and a service-oriented approach.

* Experience creating systems, strategic planning of projects, thinking through prioritization and scheduling, while considering and communicating with all stakeholders.

* Experience with contemporary art, electronics, printmaking, and computer-aided design and fabrication are highly desirable (CNC, etc).

The expected pay range for this position is $31.25 to $41.83 per hour.
