Job Summary: Teaches one to three sections of Journalism and Digital Media and/or Communication Studies classes. Classes may include, COMM 1500, COMM 1800, COMM 2500, and/or COMM 2570.Reports pedagogical problems and classroom management to the COMM department coordinator. Student complaints and teacher absences should be reported to the Division Office.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties: 1. Follows the course curriculum outline, syllabus, and Canvas course shell

2. Prepares & delivers lectures and other classroom activities face-to-face or online

3. Prepares and administers student evaluations

4. Keeps accurate classroom records

5. Coordinates Student ADA accommodation requests following college policy and procedures

6. Answer student questions and provide necessary feedback on student progress

7. Follows SLCC policies and procedures

9. Completes all required training

10. Supports department assessment initiatives

11. Participate and collaborate with SLCC Student Media Center (SMC) to promote and involve students in the SMC

12. Meets College and department deadlines and evaluates student work in a timely manner including submitting final grades on time

13. Demonstrates and supports professional commitment to division, school, and college mission and values

14. Instruct and assess students on the following topics depending in the course:
COMM 1500 – Media & Society
- function, performance, and structure of individual mass media and the relationships between media, audiences and media, and government
-compare of the origins, current status, future trends, and social/political issues of the major communication media

COMM 1800 – Digital Media Tools & Techniques
- digital media terms, such as multimedia, integration, interactive, HTML
- image editing using Photoshop, web basics using Photoshop and Dreamweaver, audio editing using Audition, video basics using Premiere Pro

COMM 2500 – Elements and Issues of Digital Media
-Information Theory, Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Communication Privacy Management Theory, Cultivation Analysis Theory, Technological Determinism, etc
-the trends in modern communication technology as they apply to consumers, content, distribution, and stakeholders

COMM 2570 – Intro to Visual Communication
-theories of visual perception including the introduction of sensual (Gestalt, Constructivism, Ecological), Perceptual (Cognitive, Semiotic) and Persuasion theories
-elements and principles of visual communication, which include the use of form, line, shape, color, texture, mass, position, space, motion, contrast, perspective, composition, harmony, light, and sound
-visual communication genres/media including typography, images, movies/film, television, cartoons/comics, Internet, gaming, and other media using specified criteria.

2. Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators
3. Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments
4. Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards
5. Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades
6. Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance
7. Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines
8. Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment
9. Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy
10. Maintains professional and collegial behavior
11. Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1‐2 days)
12. Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure
13. Completes all required employee trainings
14. Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines
15. Provides ADA accommodations as requested
16. Other job related duties as needed

Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s degree in Journalism, Mass COMM, digital media, multimedia, media production, visual communication or a closely related field, and experience teaching COMM classes at a college level
Industry experience in video, TV, radio, journalism, and/or PR are a plus.

Preferred Qualifications: College teaching experience in Media and Society, Journalism, Mass COMM, digital media, multimedia, media production, visual communication or a closely related fieldOnline and face-to-face teaching experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of Mass COMM theories and history, basic TV/video production, radiobroadcasting/streaming, journalism and reporting, social media, and related disciplinesAbility to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture,ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across theCollege.Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
